This Is Important
As Muslims today, especially as Muslim women, we know how difficult it can be to put our faith into practice, and we often have serious questions about Islam. We are bombarded with messages about the “best” or most “liberating” lifestyle and Islam’s limited applicability in the “modern” world. We are often uncertain about our roles as Muslim women. These pressures and doubts lead to dissatisfaction and frustration. We long for happiness and clarity, but we do not know how or where to find what we seek and the uncertainty we have begins to increase. We feel disconnected from Allah, the Most Exalted, and we don’t know how to connect to Him and to fully understand what He expects of us as women. Growing feelings of discontent and uncertainty about Islam have become one of the foremost challenges the Muslim community is facing today.
The Sila Initiative was founded to address the challenge of discontentment, uncertainty and conflicting messages. By emphasizing the need to connect with Allah, we hope our research and educational efforts will bring a much needed balance to contemporary discussions on women and men in Islam. We hope to provide women and men an uplifting perspective on their place in the world and a greater understanding of their roles, bringing them contentment and allowing them to sincerely utter the words of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace): I am content with Allah as my Lord, with Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) as my messenger, and with Islam as my religion (Riyadh as-Saliheen, Hadith 1040).
